Winter, by Marissa Meyer
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #4
Published by Feiwel & Friends (November 10th, 2015)
Genre: Young Adult, Science-Fiction, Fantasy, Romance
Goodreads // The Book Depository
Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.
Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend–the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.
Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters? Fans will not want to miss this thrilling conclusion to Marissa Meyer’s national bestselling Lunar Chronicles series.
saying that i enjoyed winter is an understatement.
i didn’t just enjoy it. i LOVED it from the bottom of my heart, even though it took me three weeks to finish it, mainly because 1) i didn’t want the series to end and 2) sometimes i didn’t have time.
first of all, let me tell you: this book is HUGE. like 800 pages huge (my ~french~edition was 900 pages long but only because the front-size was bigger). however it was totally worth it, i never got bored throughout the whole book.
i loved the fact there was similarities between the original fairy tale (which is Snow White for Winter), but it is still original. there is more to the plot than just the retelling, not only in this book but all the previous ones.
i can’t say much without spoiling, but all that’s left for you to do is go read this series as soon as possible. it’s one of my favorites, and i highly recommend it.
i’m moving into a spoiler-filled discussion, so if you haven’t read the book, do not read what’s coming next. no seriously, go read this book. it’s amazing. you wouldn’t want to be spoiled.
i don’t know where to start, so i’m just going to list some of my favorite things that have happened in this book:
+ Winter picks up right where Cress left, and soon afterward action and ~THINGS~ start to happen: Kai comes back to his castle, and the rest of the crew start planning for the revolution against Levana. and there are spaceships, and battles, and IT WAS SO AMAZING.
+ in the meantime, we get to know more about Winter’s life in Levana’s castle, and we discover about her “sickness”, and how her stepmother treats her, etc.
+ then, there was that part where Levana ordered Jacin to kill Winter, and he made up a whole scenario so that everyone thinks she’s dead while she’s not, because he couldn’t kill her, because HE LOVED HER, and not only because he finds her beautiful (as in the fairy tale). and THIS is wonderful.
+ after that, Winter and Scarlet (who was captivated by Levana) flee from the castle and look for Cinder, Wolf, Iko, and Thorne. they find them, eventually, in Wolf’s home (well, his home before becoming the “Wolf” we know now), and we meet his mother, whose name is MAHA. it is the first time i see my name in a book. EVER. this is so amazing. i was surprised when i saw it. (let’s just forget that she dies at the middle of the book. *tries to stay calm*)
+ i felt like about 80% of this book is set on the moon? which is so amazing, because i think that we didn’t get much of it in the previous books, so that was pleasing (for me, at least).
+ also, can we talk about all the ~ships~?! they are too much for my poor heart to bear. i’m in pain from all the cuteness of all of them: Cinder and Kai, Scarlet and Wolf, Cress and Thorne (my personal favorite), and Winter and Jacin. i initially thought my favorite was Cinder and Kai, but let me tell you, Cress and Thorne surpassed them. they were so cute. and Thorne’s speech at the end? it was the death of me.
+ speaking of the end, that ending was so satisfying. even though it was a little sad to see everyone split up, and come back to their normal life, but STILL. usually, there would be some unanswered questions at the end of every series, but Marissa Meyer just wrapped it up very well.
+ to sum up, this series was amazing. it had everything i love (adventure, fairy tale retelling, battles…), and i’m so sad to see it end. oh well… *sigh*.
